Art and Desire

Opera in one act for six singers and chamber orchestra

Synopsis: The scene takes place in the mid-1970’s, twenty years after the death of Jackson Pollock. It is set in a quiet near-empty bar in Manhattan. A sax player and a vibes player perform softly for a handful of patrons. The scene portrays a purely fictional meeting between Lee Krasner and Clement Greenberg. Lee and Clem have not spoken to each other for years. As their uneasy conversation unfolds, three more customers enter the bar, two attractive young women and a middle-aged man who bears a strong resemblance to the dissipated Pollock near the time of his death.

These four tracks are a continuous section from the middle of the opera:

"Dark and Desolate"
from Art and Desire
"Energy Made Visible"
from Art and Desire
"I Want You, Beautiful"
from Art and Desire
Sextet: "You call This Painting?"
from Art and Desire

Here is a video of the final scene, a duet between Lee Krasner and the ghost of Jackson Pollock
