I composed Sleeping Giant in the fall of 2022 shortly after hearing Marilyn Nonken’s performance of Morton Feldman’s monumental Triadic Memories at the Bang on a Can Loud Weekend @MASS MoCA.
On my way home from the festival, I reflected on the experience and marveled at the way Feldman’s music filled such a vast expanse of time and space. Sleeping Giant was the result of this reflection.
The title, Sleeping Giant, is borrowed from a book of photographs by Vance Gellert which depicts the devastation of Minnesota’s massive Iron Range caused by decades of the mining industry. Vance’s photos are strange and wonderful on their own. I am so honored that he allowed me to use these photographs in the performance along with my music.
